Virginia school explosion injures eight N.C. workers

Eight workers for a Lumberton-based contractor were injured Sunday in an explosion at a Newport News middle school, authorities said.

The employees of T.R. Driscoll Inc.'s Kinston office had been doing repair work at the school for about five weeks and were working on the roof at the time of the explosion, authorities said.

The cause of the blast, which blew out a wall at the school, hasn't been determined.

Company president Jim Driscoll said Monday that he didn't know the extent of the workers' injuries. Authorities in Newport News said two of the men were released from the hospital on Monday.
