Raleigh, N.C. — A 35-year-old woman, who has nearly 100 fraud-related convictions, was in federal custody Wednesday under allegations that she stole checks out of Wake County mailboxes.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service believes that Hollie Chaimowitz altered the payee names and money amounts on the checks, then cashed them. The thefts occurred between August and November.
Investigators said that Chaimowitz also had two dozen warrants out for her arrest in eastern North Carolina.
She is being held without bond until a detention hearing next week.
Chaimowitz was put on probation in April after being convicted of numerous fraud-related charges in New Hanover County, according to state Department of Correction records. Her convictions include 27 for larceny, 26 for forgery, 26 for uttering a forged instrument and 14 for passing a worthless check. She has also been convicted of credit card theft, attempted identity theft and defrauding an innkeeper.
DOC records show that her criminal record dates to 2000 and includes one 5-month prison sentence.
