Durham, N.C. — A Durham man wanted for kidnapping and assault was arrested Saturday after police say he lied to officers about being the victim of a robbery.

Dexter Lavern Hooks, 44, of Angier Avenue, was wanted on two counts of extortion and two counts each of first-degree kidnapping and assault inflicting serious injury in connection with two incidents in early November.

On Saturday afternoon, police said, Boyd reported that he had been robbed at knifepoint on Grace Lane. Later, though, he admitted that he had given a man money for drugs, but the man didn't give him any drugs, police said.

Hooks was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, filing a false police report and resisting, delaying and obstructing officers. He was placed in the Durham County Jail under a $650,500 bond.

Police are also seeking Demario Lashuan "Real" Boyd, 24, of Vickers Avenue, on the same charges in the early November incidents.

Two other men – Justin Brooks Sharpe, 26, of Weldon Terrace and Adrian Whoie, 26, of Kilarney Drive – are also in jail on charges in those cases. Whoie is being held under a $525,000 bond, and Sharpe under a $250,000 bond.

Hooks, whose criminal record dates from 1982, was released from prison on Oct. 11 after serving three months on larceny and misdemeanor breaking-and-entering convictions, according to state Department of Correction records.

DOC records show Hooks was convicted as a habitual felon in 1998 and of first-degree rape and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in 1990.

Boyd is listed as an absconder from probation by the DOC. He has convictions for selling and possessing drugs.
