Our friends lost nearly everything in their Chapel Hill apt in 2000 because neighbors in a connecting building (illegally) sublet the apt to some young men who were into "gardening". A lamp overheated and the men waited too long to call the FD. Everyone (though not all pets) escaped, and there wasn't enough evidence left to arrest the men. Who was first in line for Red Cross aid? These 3 guys, of course.

I could not agree more As a matter of fact, they should be able to read our mail before we get it. Even cell phones - think of all the illegal activities on them.

They should just go ahead and put microphones in every house.

Maybe even cameras in the bedrooms & bathrooms to insure that we are all "behaving"

There are SOOOOO many people we all know of that either have illegal pot, drugs, or alcohol production going on in their home. To my knowledge, you can't simply call a number to report someone. You could, but the police couldn't go in without major evidence beforehand. I wouldn't mind a bit for police to go through my home. If you live a clean life, what's the worry? But obviously, this would never go over with the ACLU freaks. The police can never win the illegal substance war because their hands are tied so much.

Lol. I had a friend who's apartment caught fire because of sun lamps he was using in the closet to grow his own.

Firefighters do a "primary" and "secondary" (if needed) search of the house if there was nobody there to tell them that the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire. After putting out the blaze there are still "hot spots" to watch. During the Fire Marshalls investigation of the dwelling to determine the cause of the fire they'd search every floor/room to try to locate the starting point of the blaze. Once found, there's an obvious obligation to report illegal findings to the police department.
