James Robert Crumpler - mug shot 11/15/09 - Wake deputy shoots man during search drug raid

A man shot by a Wake County deputy last Saturday pointed a gun at agents who were searching a Willow Spring residence for drugs, according search warrants released Friday.

A warrant signed by Detective B. Manley, with the Wake County Sheriff's Office, says that two confidential sources had separately reported that drugs, including marijuana and methamphetamine, were being manufactured in a backyard shed at 1913 Buck Rowland Road.

Late Saturday afternoon, the Wake County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team and State Bureau of Investigation conducted a "no-knock search" at the residence, according to a warrant signed by SBI agent N.H. Thompson.

Witnesses told the SBI that when agents entered the residence, James Robert Crumpler was sitting on a sofa, pointing a gun at agents. Deputy Scott Earp fired and struck Crumpler in the upper torso, the SBI warrant says.

Crumpler was treated at WakeMed, then charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling place or motor vehicle for a contraband substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is free on a $5,000 bond.

The SBI is investigating the shooting, following standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings.

The warrant from the Wake County Sheriff's Office says that deputies seized marijuana seeds, drug paraphernalia, an assault rifle, 12-gauge shotgun, automatic pistol, two rifles, assorted ammunition and magazines, and pistol permits.

During its investigation, the SBI seized a handgun, a projectile and shell casing from the scene.

The Wake County warrant says that Crumpler has faced "numerous" charges, including with assault by pointing a gun and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. State Department of Correction records show that he was convicted of possession of stolen goods in 2001 and two counts of damaging or destroying a vending machine in 2003.

Earp, who has worked for the sheriff's office for 11 years, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Oh, I'm sure you've heard them all!! Too bad the REALITY of any of the statements you have heard has not made its way into your grey matter.

If it's a criminal justice degree, you wouldn't want to tell the world because that would put all the philosophy and english majors a peg above your education level!

Remember - as stated before - there is always a reason why people like ME have to pay the salaries of people like YOU!

Do not be jealous of my education!! I'm the good guy! I make your job easier - but I just do not subscribe to the "I'M ALWAYS RIGHT YOU ARE ALWAYS RIGHT" mentality! Sorry if I payed more attention in history to what the Constitution stood for!

IT IS OK! THE WORLD IS NOT OUT TO GET YOU!! SEEK HELP IF YOU THINK IT IS!

I have a four year college degree. However the I pay your salary line was pretty funny. I haven't heard that either. Haha.

You're definitely wrong about that, but what's new? - LOL!!! I've got enough cattle out back, I don't need your lying bull!

Silly little man - you must be a cop - got that "I'm ALWAYS RIGHT YOU ARE ALWAYS WRONG ATTITUDE!!" Run along, there is always a reason why people like ME have to pay the salaries of people like YOU

"Please, you and I both know he wouldn't have the guts to do it."

This is the funniest thing I have read ALL DAY!! Coming from the BOY who is scared to sit at a resturant with his back to the door?! Believe me, citizens like me have MORE KNOWLEDGE and MORE COMMON SENSE than people like you will ever have!! But I guess that comes with education! How many times did you have to take BLET before you passed it? Hardest 6 months of your life I bet, huh?

"Look, we know you're a cop, you're gonna defend cops NO MATTER WHAT,"

You're definitely wrong about that, but what's new?

"Furthermore, stop being a tough guy behind your computer and keyboard. If the SWAT team busted through your door and you were actually fast enough to get your hands on a gun instead of posting dumb comments on WRAL, you would end up just like this guy........Shot."

Please, you and I both know he wouldn't have the guts to do it.

Concerned LEO - here's my profile info - read it and drink some warm milk - it will help calm your frail nerves!!

"go out and find yourself...and stop trying to make the world your enemy."

I come from a family who fully supports gun rights and self protection! I have related family who keep guns in every room of their house!

First and foremost, if the "big bad SWAT team" got past the driveway camera notifying me of who is on my property and then past the dogs in the yard, they'd have to get through the dogs in the house, and then they would get to meet my buddies smith and wesson!! Sorry chump, I'm not like the drug dealer - I'm a law abiding citizen who pays the salaries of people like you!! WHY?! Because I went to college! Now, run along and take your big bad BLET certification and put it to some use collecting revenue for the state. i.e. parking/speeding tickets!
