Raleigh residents on 'honor system' for trash assistance
Raleigh residents are on the honor system to certify they are too infirm to take their garbage cans to the curb for weekly trash collection, the city decided Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedThe city's Need Assistance Program allows residents who are disabled or anyone 65 and older an exemption from bringing their cans to the curb. Instead, city workers retrieve trash from the back yard of registered properties.
To prevent abuse of the program, the city decided to send a letter outlining the qualifications to the 4,700 Raleigh households on the assistance list. They’ll be asked to sign the letter and send it back. When new households apply for the program, they’ll be asked to provide documentation of age or disability.
City Manager Russell Allen said the move was prompted by the realization that Raleigh had about twice the registered households as a similar program in Charlotte.
