An 82-year-old LaGrange man died early Thursday as he walked across U.S. Highway 70 east near Wilber's Barbecue in Goldsboro, police said.

Ralph McKinley Garris' vehicle got stuck in the median, and he tried to walk across the highway to get to his job, police said.

Just before 4 a.m., a mail delivery truck hit him as he crossed the road. Garris died at the scene.

Guy Nelson Basden, 74, of Kinston, was driving the truck, police said. It appeared that the weather and poor visibility could have contributed to the crash. No charges were expected.

Officer Jay Holland of the Goldsboro Police Departments’ Specialized Traffic Enforcement Unit was investigating.

How sad...

I am not one that usually points fingers at people, instead I just usually sit back and shake my head in silence. However, it is amazing to me the number of people who are so quick to reply that they forget to read.

The article clearly states that he was walking to work due to his car being stuck in the median. It was mentioned in the articled and once again pointed out in a post.

Yes it was truly a shame that this gentleman of his age had to walk to work. A sad story indeed.

When you are a senior citizen in the 70's, 80's etc, it not really the same as being in your 20's, 30's, 40's 50's and 60's. Wait until you be bless to get there and I am sure you will see there is a difference.

No mention what a shame it was that he had to walk to his job.

In the story it states that was b/c his vehicle got stuck in the median...the median there is grass and that area around Wibur's floods easily (I drive by there quite often)..the median is right in front of Wilber's and stretches for quite a bit both directions, so not sure how far he might have had to walk
