FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man has been sentenced to two decades in prison for beating a 78-year-old disabled acquaintance to death.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that Charles Gainey II, 35, accepted a plea deal Friday, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and common law robbery in the October 2008 slaying of Clarence Bauer.
A Cumberland County Superior Court judge sentenced Gainey to between 18 years and nearly 23 years in prison.
Prosecutors said that Gainey used Clarence Bauer's car and cell phone after beating him to death at his Star Lane home.
Gainey apologized to his mother and Bauer's son during his plea.
According to state Department of Correction records, Gainey was convicted of seven larceny- and burglary-related charges between 2004 and 2006. He served separate 7- and 13-month prison sentences when his probation was revoked twice. He was most recently released in February 2008.
