Former Garner mayor Rohrbaugh dies

Garner, N.C. — Don Rohrbaugh, who served as mayor of Garner from 1984 to 2001, died Thursday after a nine-year battle with leukemia. He was 80.

A New Jersey native, Rohrbaugh moved to Garner in 1974. He worked 34 years with the state Department of Transportation.

He also served on the Garner Board of Aldermen, the Garner Planning Board and the Garner Area School Advisory Council and was co-chairman of the Garner Centennial Committee. He was former chairman of the Wake County Transportation Advisory Committee, a member of the I-40 High Occupancy Vehicle Policy Committee and a board member of the the North Carolina League of Municipalities.

Rohrbaugh is survived by his wife, Betty Hancock Rohrbaugh; a son, Richard Rohrbaugh of Cary; two daughters, Cathy Penny of Clayton and Mary Lib Perry of Raleigh; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Saint Mary, Mother of the Church, Catholic Church in Garner, and burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
