Umstead State Park considers access changes

The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation decided Tuesday against a change that would have opened a shortcut into William B. Umstead State Park.

The state took up the issue after hearing from hikers who used a neighborhood pedestrian entrance from Graylyn Drive to access the park’s trails.

Residents balked at the use and the vehicles it brought to their neighborhood. They complained and in Sept. 2008 got the state Department of Transportation to post “no parking” signs and block off the entrance, which leads to a maintenance road.

Lewis Ledford, director of the state parks, said the decision to keep the access closed was based on concerns about security and the cost of establishing it as a permanent, public entrance.

Ha Ha Lizard! That was funny! I'm sure that several people are biting their nails after that comment.

They need to add a tax to the residential property adjoining the park in order to raise funds so we can address "concerns about security and the cost of establishing it as a permanent, public entrance". This is a public park, not a private country club.

Easy Fix Purchase a home there. Then you will have access to the park. I love outside the City so I don't have to put up with cars parking my my street, as I did when I lived in the city. Now when I want to go to Umstead, which I do a few times a year, I use the Main entrance to the park. I even take my horse with me.

By god if they want a disturbance I'll give it to them. Everyone should go down to that neighborhood and lay on their horns.

Yankees and their McMansions need to go back north.

Where do I park to go deer hunting now?
