Eureka Springs, N.C. — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office charged two Fayetteville men Friday in the death of a Eureka Springs man killed during a home break-in early Sept. 30.

Gregory David Sterling, 20, of 2971 Gordon Way, and Clarence Eugene Peterson, 18, of 1207 Wentworth Place, were charged with first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Donyell Debron McCutchen, 35, of 1558 Hissop St., was shot to death after people forced their way into his home, authorities said.

Both Sterling and Peterson have been in the Cumberland County Detention Center since Wednesday on unrelated charges stemming from an armed robbery in Fayetteville, authorities said.

A person of interest who had been sought by detectives, Avery Jamar Ford, 21, turned himself in Friday evening. Investigators questioned Avery Jamar Ford, 21, and he was released without being charged, authorities said.

According to state Department of Correction records, Peterson has been probation since he was convicted in January of breaking into 15 vehicles in New Hanover County. DOC records also show that Sterling was convicted of larceny in 2006.
