Chatham County resident treated for rabies after contact with bobcat

Pittsboro, N.C. — A Chatham County resident is being treated for rabies after having contact with a bobcat on Friday.

The exposure occurred east of N.C. Highway 751 and north of U.S. Highway 64, according to Holly Coleman, Chatham County public health director.

The bobcat was killed and sent to the State Laboratory of Public Health, where it tested positive for rabies.

"Healthy bobcats normally do not approach humans. Residents are encouraged to use caution around wildlife and to keep their pets vaccinated against rabies," Coleman said.

A rabies vaccination clinic for dogs and cats will be held Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Animal Shelter on County Landfill Road, west of Pittsboro.

Cats should be taken to the clinic in boxes or crates and dogs on leashes.

I think WRAL has the rabies clinic date wrong. The email from Chatham County on this story says: "The Chatham County Public Health Department's Animal Control Division is sponsoring a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs and cats on Saturday, November 7, from 9:00 am to noon at the County Animal Shelter. The building is located on County Landfill Road, five miles west of Pittsboro, just off of US Highway 64. Please bring cats in boxes or crates and dogs on leashes. The cost will be $5.00." The rabies clinics are usually held quarterly.

Last year, I had a bobcat run out onto the highway into my car. It was mid-morning and he crossed two lanes, a median and then two more lanes into me. After picking up the car parts strewn in the road, I checked on him and he was deceased. I drove back that way four days later to find that not a single animal had touched the carcas...leading me to believe he may have been rabid. Very weird behavior!

This is Chatham County. Did the bobcat give the resident rabies? Or the other way around?

What kind of contact did this guy have? Running into a bobcat usually results in more treatment than rabies shots. Anyway, hope he's ok.
