Pedestrian hit by train in Raleigh

Amtrak

A train struck a pedestrian Sunday afternoon near South Wilmington and Hoke streets in Raleigh.

Police said that at about 5 p.m., John Rowe, 49, and two other people were walking down the tracks when the train conductor blew the whistle as a warning. Two people ran into the woods, but Rowe didn't make it in time and was struck by the Amtrak train, police said.

Paramedics transported Rowe to WakeMed, where he was listed in fair condition Monday.

Police said Rowe is believed to be homeless.

The train was traveling from New York to Raleigh and continued on to its next stop in Charlotte after a brief delay. About 215 passengers were on board the train, an Amtrak official said.
