Enfield, N.C. — A 32-year-old man fled from a traffic stop but got caught when his scooter crashed into a sandbox in an apartment complex in Enfield Wednesday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy G.H. Teal tried to stop a red scooter speeding along U.S. Highway 301 toward the Carriage House Apartments complex, authorities said. The driver – identified as Brad Teaboy McDaniel, of Enfield – instead fled toward the apartment complex.

The scooter crashed into a sandbox, and McDaniel fled on foot, authorities said. He was caught in a nearby apartment.

Deputies also arrested Brian ONeal Tillery, 28, of Enfield, for allegedly trying to prevent them from arresting McDaniel. Tillery was charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer.

Both men were being held in the Halifax County Jail Thursday. McDaniel had a $2,500 bond and a first court appearance on Oct. 28. Tillery had a $500 bond and a Sept. 30 court date.

According to state Department of Correction records, McDaniel's license was revoked in 2003. He has convictions for drug offenses and assault inflicting serious injury.

DOC records show Tillery was placed on probation Aug. 17 for convictions for giving fictitious information to law enforcement, reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a license.
