Two killed, one injured in Durham wreck

The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. when an eastbound 2004 Nissan Maxima driven by Marcus Rogers, 19, of Ruth Street, ran off the right side of the road, police said.

The vehicle then went out of control, struck a ditch, flipped over numerous times and landed in the woods, police said. All three occupants were ejected from the vehicle.

Destinee Taylor, 16, and Demonte Antwann Cissell, 22, both of Durham, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Rogers was listed in critical condition Wednesday at Duke University Hospital. Police were given incorrect information late Tuesday that Rogers had died from his injuries.

Taylor was a student at Hillside High School in Durham.

"She was a fine girl.  We loved her," said her grandfather, Tony Vaughn.

"She loved her family," said her cousin, Denise McKever. "She would want nothing else but than to be with her family right now."

EMS workers at first feared a baby may have been thrown from the car after finding an empty car seat.

“We just went over and over the area to take every precaution humanly possible to make sure that no one else was in this crash,” EMS worker Kevin Wilson said.

Speed was a factor in the wreck, police said.
