Fayetteville officer involved in fatal wreck

A Fayetteville police officer struck and killed a pedestrian with his patrol car late Saturday, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville police officer struck and killed a pedestrian with his patrol car late Saturday, police said.

The officer, whose name hasn't been released, was traveling on Grove Street toward Eastern Boulevard at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when a man stepped in front of his cruiser and was struck, police said.

The officer immediately requested medical assistance, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, police said.

The man didn't have any identification on him, and police were trying to identify him.

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is conducting an internal investigation into the incident. The state Highway Patrol and members of Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit are also investigating the incident.

The officer was placed on administrative duty until the investigations are complete.
