A homeless man stabbed and hit a homeless woman with a piece of wood Saturday morning, Raleigh Police Lt. A.B. Lull said.

Rebecca Smith Vazquez and Roy Douglas Prelwitz, who is also homeless, were both staying in a wooded area, near South Saunders and South Wilmington streets, when a dispute occurred, Lull said.

After being attacked, Vazquez sought help. She was listed in good condition Sunday at WakeMed.

Police charged Prelwitz with assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held in the Wake County Jail Sunday under a $500,000 bond.

In addition to what BLeighVnJC has said here....Rebecca is indeed a wonderfully sweet, loving, compassionate lady....WHEN she's sober! She fights that demon every day of her life. We have no right to sit in judgment on people when we know absolutely nothing about what put them in the position they're in! How do we know how we would respond if we found ourselves in a similar situation? If the man who allegedly assaulted her is who I think he is, I know......yes, KNOW.........that it would take an awful lot of provocation for him to do what he's accused of doing! And I also know that Rebecca could have very easily been capable of that level of provocation. I've seen her in action when she's thoroughly intoxicated. Please, people....withhold your judgments and just pray for these homeless people! Remember........there, but for the grace of God Almighty, you could find yourself as well!

@Chaniya Yes I know they don't provide hope for anyone. for those that really care take some time to do more than pass some money or food through the lowered window. spend some time talking to them. Hear their story

BleighVnJC, nice try and I applaud you. I don't believe some of these people are interested in breaking a sweat to provide hope to anyone.

I see nothing funny about it either 'circlecity'. What has this become, the comedy blog? The article is informing us about a serious crime committed by a homeless person to another homeless person, nothing funny about it. And 'Boomylar' that is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard!

That's all....

It is a shame some of the comments being made here. Yes these persons are the least and the last of sociaty but they are human just as you and I are. How many of you have actually taken the time to have a conversation with some of these people? I have, this woman who was stabbed (with a knife) and beaten with a slab of wood is the most jovial and sweet woman when she is not drinking. I pray for both of them. So much happens to these homeless that keeps them down once they have lost jobs. Yes many of us are just months away from homelessness ourselves. Several of the homeless in Raleigh were productive citizens just as you and I are but due to an illness or accident became homeless and have been so taken advantage of they have lost hope. What are you doing to give them Hope?
