A Rocky Mount man faces charges after authorities say he assaulted a police officer investigating a larceny at a Kmart store, off North Wesleyan Boulevard, Thursday afternoon.

A store employee told police that Keith McCoy Richardson, 28, had hidden merchandise on his person. Police said that when the officer confronted Richardson, he pushed the officer and tried to flee. The officer subdued and arrested Richardson.

Richardson was charged with assault on a government official, obstructing and delaying a government official, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana. Police identified the weapon as a box cutter.

Richardson was placed in the Nash County Jail.

According to state Department of Correction records, Richardson has two larceny and two assault convictions, including misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. He served eight months for a probation violation in 2007 and three months for larceny and second-degree attempted trespassing in 2008.

so if i read the story right, he "didnt " steal anything, was just accused. then made matters worse by pushing and running.. wasnt charged with stealing anything.... about 25 yrs ago(when i worked part time at walmart) if you accused someone of stealing and they didnt have anything "you" were the one that could get in legal trouble.... story doesnt say he actually stole anything

Again w/crime in RM. That place is really having a hard time.

kwazimac, you just might have a point there. I bet if there was somebody at every court house/mageest(sp?)office waiting. I bet you have some of the same simalar stories in every sizeable town and even more in the big cities/towns. very good point.

Why is this in the news anyway? A crook pushed a cop and was caught. Happens all the time, Could WRAL be looking for stories about Rocky Mount? Trust me the city is bad enough that you can wait a few more hours and find a much better story than this.

I'M CURIOS HOW DO YOU FIGURE HIS FAMILY HAS LOW MORALS. just because he did some bad and stupid stuff why is family low morals. The courts let him out/off. The law picks him up. I said yesterday(yeah we've made the news again) Some of the best raised and good family's have bad people in them..no matter how you teach them and guide them you can't make them be that way....... you r so quick to throw stones at everyone, but only person to blame is the one who does the crime. as the say goes: guns don't kill people, people kill people. you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink...you can teach right and wrong but you can't make them do either....................
