Cary, N.C. — Cary police are urging citizens to take precautions and act quickly after three recent reports of indecent exposure.
Over the past month, people have reported a man exposing himself in the Williamsburg Manor-Nottingham Road area near Cary Crossroads shopping center.
Police said the man has not approached anyone, but they are urging residents to always be aware of their surroundings and walk in well-lit and well-traveled areas and, when possible, with others.
They also remind people to contact 911 if confronted and to notify authorities quickly to help increase the chances of apprehending the suspect.
In most cases, the man has been described as white or Hispanic, 25 to 35 years old and standing 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall.
More crime prevention tips are available by calling 919-469-4324 or on the police department page of the Town of Cary's Web site.

The fact that you haven't seen evidence doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'm sure with some digging you could find research done on the progression or escalation of paraphilic behavior. Perhaps a professional in law enforcement or psychology could comment here?

I don't think there is any evidence, except anecdotal, to support that conclusion. Flashers get their jollies from the act and the reaction to it. Sexual assault, or rape, is not about sex -- it's about violence, control, and domination. That doesn't mean exposure should be ignored, though, just understood a little better. Nobody can predict how a younger person might react when caught in such a situation, or what the long-term effect might be.
