Teen missing in Neuse River off Oriental

e-mail print friendly

A teenager went missing while swimming with friends in the Neuse River off Oriental, near where it empties into the Pamlico Sound, early Sunday.

Around 6:30 a.m., Pamlico County 911 dispatchers told the Coast Guard that three teenagers had gone out on a personal watercraft, and only two were wearing life vests. They went swimming, and the boy without a life jacket began to struggle.

One teen tried to put a life jacket on him while the other headed to the watercraft, but the struggling teen went under the water, according to the Coast Guard. He did not resurface.

The Coast Guard, Marines and Pamlico County Sheriff's Office were searching for the boy by air and sea.

Is there any further followup to this story. Any search & recovery info, name, etc.

Prayers to the family and friends. Totally unnecessary tragedy.

The under currents in rivers are deadly. NEVER go swimming in a river.

That's a real shame. By the sounds of things, he didn't make it.

I'm a pretty good swimmer, but you won't catch me swimming past where I can touch in that area. Those waters even on a calm day have a pretty good chop.
