A rising senior at North Carolina State University drowned while swimming with friends in Jordan Lake Saturday evening, according to the state Wildlife Resources Commission.

Stephen Patrick Russell, 23, tried to swim across a cove around 7:30 p.m. but didn't make it, said Sgt. Reggie Barker.

Divers, along with Chatham County sheriff's deputies, wildlife agents, firefighters and EMS personnel, searched for Russell through the night. Rescuers recovered his body near the Farrington Point boat access ramp around 10 a.m. Sunday.

No foul play is suspected in the death, Barker said.

Russell played ice hockey for N.C. State. His family had moved from Canada to North Carolina several years ago, Barker said.
