State and local law enforcement officers are participating in "Operation Firecracker." The 10-day crackdown began Monday and will target speeders and impaired drivers with checkpoints and increased patrols.

Friday morning, troopers ticketed more than 100 drivers in the area of Interstate 40 near Harrison Avenue.

Last year, law enforcement officers issued 66,738 traffic and criminal citations and conducted 5,724 sobriety checkpoints and patrols in the 10 days including the Fourth of July holiday.

Checkpoints are illegal according to our constitution. but who listens to that anymore. just makes the police do less actual "police work". if they see you driving erratically then go ahead and pull ya over. a checkpoint means that you are guilty until proven innocent. not the way it should be.

You need to go and do some research!

Actually, all fines above the cost of court goes to the public schools in the county where the infraction occurs. The Governor doesn't get any of it.

wow 66738 tickets an the county has no money humm some one is pocketing alot ot money politics

"Here's an idea--and just call me crazy--but instead of doing this just once in a while, could you perhaps enforce the speed limit on roads such as I-540 every day? Not a day goes by that I'm not passed by numerous idiots driving 90+mph on 540 without a cop in sight. If you really want to earn some revenue for good ol Bev, start looking at 540"---

We only enforce the law on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Today is Friday. (sarcasm of course).. We DO enforce the law every day. It's not like we're just sitting around watching TV.

"Seeing that the speed limit is over 100 MPH on the German Autobans, there is no reason that 55 and 65 should be enforced on the Interstates in this country when the Interstates are built to the same specifications that the German Autobans are."----

Apples and Oranges. They actually know how to drive there.
