Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies arrested a student at E.E. Smith High School Tuesday morning after finding a gun in his book bag.

Jonathan Britton, 18, of 6716 St. Julian Way, told deputies he brought the gun to school to trade for a motorcycle.

Authorities said that students spotted Britton with the gun, which was not loaded, and reported it to school officials who called the sheriff's office.

Britton was charged with felony possession of a firearm on school campus and was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center.

James. Adult students are in college, not high school. Secondly, I would like for you to go to the nearest high school, sit in a few classes, the cafe and check students out getting in and out of the building and tell me which ones are smart enough and mature enough to have a gun? Show me which "true" adults would fit in that category? Schools are too large and dynamic to allow this kind of nonsense. We are not on the prairie. Schools are for educating the minds, not using the nines. Spare me. No one should have a gun on campus, other than the SRO.

ksh33, actually, I believe, that adult students, once registered to carry a gun, and attend a proper training course, should be allowed to carry a concealed gun; same with teachers as well. Same should go to universities as well.

ZMan, in NC, with one exception, you must have a permit from the Sheriff of your County to receive a pistol/revolver.

His mama must be VERY proud.

Of course the motorcycle owner had gun permit IN HAND for the transation. Else that would be illegal too (or is that just Wake County?).

Doug, check NCGS 14-269.2. That will tell you the true story.
