Lumberton, N.C. — Jury selection started Monday in the retrial of a Cary man accused of killing his wife almost six years ago.

Myron Britt is charged with first-degree murder in the August 2003 shooting death of his wife, Nancy Britt, a Wake County teacher, at her sister's Robeson County home.

Authorities said Myron Britt was in financial trouble and wanted to collect on his wife's $800,000 life insurance policy. Defense attorneys have maintained that the couple was happy and that Myron Britt had no motive to kill his wife.

A June 2006 trial ended in a mistrial when the jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction.

Considering it was 11-1 in FAVOR of a guilty verdict the guy should count his blessings it was a hung jury and he's got another chance for acquittal.

Strange comments from the previous 2.....I would expect a 11-1 guilty vote to be re-tried everytime. I would expect a 11-1 not guilty vote to never be re-tried. You cannot be re-tried on the same (or similar) criminal charges if acquited at the first trial. And of course, a hung jury - in essence a "no decision" -is not a bar to re-trial. If so, a hung jury would have the same effect as an acquital. Think about it.

I thought you could only be tried for a crime once. Just because its a hung jury doesn't mean he can be retried. Oh wait. Its our justice system, it can do whatever it wants.

re-trial? Couldn't convince 12 of his peers he was guilty? What's the plan, keep trying until they get a guilty verdict? WOW! What if the count had been 11 - 1 not guilty? Oh well, he may in fact be guilty but I think a lot of these "high profile" crime cases in certain areas are won or lost on public opinion. And the public doesn't always know all the facts. Maybe they should hold the trial on a news web site and everyone get to vote in a poll as to guilt or innocence.
