A student at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines died Tuesday morning in a car wreck.

The state Highway Patrol said Jennifer Lindsey Benson, 17, was killed after she lost control of her vehicle on Dowd Road near Carthage.

The car crossed the center line striking a sign first, then went down an embankment and then hit a tree, trooper said. No other vehicles were involved.

Grief counselors and clergy from area churches will be at the school Wednesday to help students cope with Benson's death.

This has been a tough week for us in Moore County. I talked to several people at the gym today and most are just shaking heads. Pretty uncommon to hear about an educator getting killed like this. The student was only 17 years old. Many prayers to the young student and the AP and all family members.

Parents find out how your child's driving is going when they are away from you. Talk to them about safety driving. Don't wait until tomorrow, do it now.

I just wonder how she was able to obtain her license. Young people don't be so anxious in obtaining your license. You have plenty of time. I now believe you should be 21 to get your license. Too many young people are being killed alone on the highway. You may not agree until it is your son or daughter.

driving is not a game. Its very serious business.

My condolences to the family. May this be a lesson to all young people who are driving to observe all speed limits on the highways and roads. Observe all signs for your safety.
