A Clayton High School senior was killed Monday morning in a one-vehicle wreck, police said.

Brittney Megan Hicks, 19, of 121 Aspen Circle in Clayton, was driving a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee east on Covered Bridge Road shortly after 11 a.m. when the vehicle drifted off the right side of the road between Brook Hill Drive and North O’Neil Street, police said. Hicks overcorrected, and the Jeep skidded off the road, hit a tree and overturned, police said.

Hicks wasn't wearing a seat belt, police said.

The accident remains under investigation, but police said it doesn't appear that Hicks was speeding at the time of the crash.

Thoughts and Prayers To Brittany's Family, Friends, and CHS Staff/Students!!!

It is so sad to read these so often.

My heart is breaking for her mom and dad. I can not even begin to imagine what they are feeling. She was such a beautiful person and is going to be greatly missed. She is in Heaven now with all God's other beautiful angels.

I don't even know what to say....My 9 year old son absolutely loved her, we just saw her last Friday where he had to get up from the table to run over to give her a hug. It breaks my heart that she was graduating next month. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Everyone needs to wear their seatbelts.

This is weighing very heavy on my heart. My daughter is a senior at Clayton High School and was friends with Brittany, who was supposed to be presenting her senior project to the senior board tonight. She did her project on child care and decided that she did not want to go into the field of child care but instead wanted to be a dentist. This is especially hard for my daughter, she is presenting her senior project to the senior board tonight on safe teen driving. I'm not sure she will be able to get through it without breaking down, she has lost several friends to automobile accidents but to have this happen on the very day that she is presenting this and advocating for the TargetTeenSafety program, which has been reported on by WRAL, it will be tough for her. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Brittany's family and friends as yet another part of our future has been taken from us. Parents are the best role models when it comes to teen driving, use your positive influence.

My 16 year old niece was also killed this same exact way on Mother's Day last week- in northern new england. Her sister, who was her passenger, walked away from the crash. They don't know if she had on her seat belt. I have my doubts. She was on a rural country road near her home. New driver of only 2 months....so sad and unnecessary. My heart goes out to all.
