William Wheeler, Highway Patrol trooper charged with drug fraud

A state Highway Patrol trooper has been charged with prescription drug fraud, authorities said.

First Sgt. William Pete Wheeler Jr., 35,was charged with two counts of obtaining controlled substances by legal prescriptions by withholding information.

Warrants allege that Wheeler obtained a prescription for the painkiller hydrocodone in January from a physician but never told the doctor that he planned to see his primary-care physician a few days later. He also is accused of filling a hydrocodone prescription at a Cary pharmacy and then telling his doctor's office that the pharmacy was out of the drug and asking the office to phone in a prescription to second pharmacy.

Wheeler, who has been with the Highway Patrol since February 1998, works at the agency's training academy. He has been placed on leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

He should call Rush Limbaugh for some advice to get off scott free.

I wonder why this guy was arrested or it made known to the public. We have doctor shoppers and druggies coming in our pharmacy and we report them but dont hear if they ever get busted.

What is going on with the SHP I dont know I if I would stop if a trooper tried to pull me over. I mean durnks, animal abuse, sexual harassment, lying under oath. It gets better and better every day

No address likely because there are people out there who hate Cops so much that it would put him and his family at risk by revealing where he lives. How would like to be in his shoes as a 10 year trooper with tons of arrests, then your address is posted so that everyone of those arrestees could travel to your home and retaliate with vandalism, harassment or worse. Good for WRAL

If this man has a serious problem then I hope he gets help. But I must look at that potential "other side" where he may have legitimate chronic pain that may not be treated properly. Yes, he should have not told one doctor that the pharmacy was out of a particular drug, that was foolish. Hydrocodone is on of the most prescribed painkillers in America. As a nurse I can certainly see the potential of this person obtaining prescription drugs for a real ailment, although that certainly does not excuse his behavior. Maybe the law enforcement community and judicial system should spend their efforts on prosecuting the massive amount of drugs coming in from MExico, and the homegrown meth makers, and the crackheads who routinely break in and steal and kill to support their habit.
