HENDERSON, N.C. — A deputy died in a single-vehicle crash north of Henderson while attempting to stop a reported reckless driver late Saturday, said Vance County Sheriff Peter White.

Authorities said that Deputy Brandon Scott Coker, 26, set off in his cruiser after receiving an alert about a reckless driver in the area shortly after 10 p.m. His cruiser ran off Nutbush Road and struck a tree, near N.C. Highway 39.

"Deputy Coker was a fine young officer who will be missed by all who knew him," White said.

Coker joined the Vance County Sheriff's Office on Jan. 8, 2007. He is survived by his wife, mother and father, and four brothers.

The sheriff's office has not released more details about the wreck.

The wreck happened in Jeff Brooks' front yard. He called 911.
