Durham, N.C. — A woman died and a man was seriously in a single-vehicle wreck on N.C. Highway 54, near Interstate 40, around midnight Saturday, police said.

A 2001 Hyundai driven by Joanna Karolina Park, 38, of Durham, crashed in the 600 block of West N.C. 54. Park died of her injuries.

Her passenger, Joseph Phelan, 27, of Durham, was airlifted to Duke University Hospital. Phelan had serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Investigators said that speed contributed to the wreck.
