Shooting

Cumberland County authorities on Monday released the names of the soldiers who were shot over the weekend at a Spring Lake restaurant.

Arthur Mwebe, 26, a Fort Bragg soldier, was in the Jamaican Restaurant and Lounge, at 129 N. Main St., with Charles Clements, 27, a soldier at Fort Hood, Texas, early Sunday when they were shot, authorities said.

Clements, who had recently returned from a deployment to Iraq, was shot in the head and killed. Mwebe was shot in a thigh and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Christopher Broadway of Unit 259, Field Service Battalion, was believed to have information that may help in the investigation, investigators said. Broadway is not a suspect, Cumberland County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said.

No charges had been filed in the case as of Tuesday afternoon.

Because of the large number of military personnel inside the club at the time of the shooting, members of the Army Criminal Investigations Division were assisting Cumberland County Sheriff's Office homicide investigators on the case.

Anyone who was at the restaurant at the time of the shooting is asked to call the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.

Charles Clements makes it home safely from Iraq only to be murdered on US soil by a fellow solider. This is horrible!! My prayers are w/ his family & loved ones.

It is sad where he was safer in Iraq than in the US. I believe it was last year where in Chicago there were more teenagers killed in Chicago last summer than troops were being killed in Iraq.
