Police on Tuesday asked for the public's help in identifying a man who attempted to rob people in the parking lot of Granville Towers early Sunday.

A man brandishing a handgun approached people sitting in an SUV in the parking lot off West Franklin Street at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday, police said. The man began knocking on the windows, but the SUV occupants drove off, police said.

The would-be robber was described as a white man or light-skinned black man, about 6 feet tall, wearing a black leather jacket with a hoodie. He also had a blue bandanna covering his face.

The man was last seen running in the direction of Rosemary Street, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.
