Raleigh council again backs single-member school board seats

e-mail print friendly

For the second time in 10 months, the City Council has voted to support the single-member system of districts for the Wake County school board.

Several mayors in other Wake County municipalities have called for changing the school board representation to nine at-large districts, with all board members being elected countywide.

Raleigh City Councilwoman Mary-Ann Baldwin said that system would make elections too expensive and could threaten the diversity on the board.

The council also passed a resolution supporting the school district's efforts for diversity in schools, including its busing policy.

When can we vote these people out of office? If they support the old way of doing things then maybe they need to be voted out.

Let's all get together this year and vote people onto the Wake County School Board that believe in saving money and not bussing students. I for one would run but I am an unknown. We need people to stand up for the rights of our kids and not make them a statistic.

Media buys, the most expensive part of campaigning, would cost the same whether running from one district or from the whle county. The only saving might be in how many buttons and signs you buy.

I bet none of them have kids in the school system either!! What a waste...and they support the bussing too!! To publicly admit that means chances are they don't want the job much longer..they should be voted out!! Good thing it is only two years terms...don't have to wait that long!

This story illustrates why at large voting needs to be undertaken. Put an end to busing students all over earth, and as for diversity, that needs to end. This sixties mentality is now over. People if you have not noticed, new century, new president, stop complaining!

Hey City Council - when you get your own mess under control, then MAYBE you could voice your opinion on something you have no business getting involved with. This is a bad idea. With the disparity in income and economic status from east to west and notrh to south in Wake County, the entire school board would more than likely come from western and northern Wake County due to the availability of funds for campaigning. There is nothing wrong with having district elections like we have now. I guess next they'll want the legislature races voted on statewide as well.
