Railroad Crossing

CSX Transportation plans to increase the speed of freight trains traveling through Cary.

Company officials said Thursday that, beginning March 23, trains will travel at 45 mph. CSX trains now travel at 35 mph through Cary.

Faster trains will reduce wait times for drivers at rail crossings on Academy Street, Harrison Avenue and Dixon Street, officials said. The move also will improve the efficiency of rail operations, they said.

Each of the three crossing s is equipped with gates and flashing lights.

Increase in speed = even worse vehicle/train collision results ...you'll still have your rushed motorists, going around gates, etc!!

Wow. Here in Benson they can now do between 75-79 mph rollin' through town. Those signals start flashing you better stop!!

The Railroad is interstate therefore local speed limits do not affect them if they decide to exceed them. Probably had more to do with the track conditions. Recently they raised the speed limit in Dunn from 45 to 60 and in Benson from 55 to 70. That's how I know about the speed regulations.

Good. Why were they limited to 35mph anyway? Was that a city regulation? Did the rail fight for this? Who brought about the change? Just curious.

"the same goes for Apex and a lot of other places."

'cept Apex's downtown is nicer.

;^)
