Raleigh, N.C. — Authorities charged a Clayton man for allegedly trying to strangle a woman in a car parked on the shoulder of Interstate 40 West.

Jerry Black, 33, of 4016 N.C. Highway 42 West, wrapped a seat belt around the woman's neck and also punched her, according to the arrest warrant. The incident occurred off I-40 West, between the U.S. Highway 70 exit and the Jones Sausage Road exit, on Feb. 11.

The woman suffered some bruising and swelling around her neck but was OK, the warrant said.

The warrant said that Black and the woman were in a relationship and described the incident as domestic violence.

Black was charged with two counts of assault and one count each of second-degree kidnapping, communicating threats, injury to personal property and interfering with emergency communications.

Black was being held in the Wake County Jail under a $50,000 bond Saturday.

Black was sentenced to probation for conviction on two counts of assault on a female in 2002 and 2003, among other charges, according to the state Department of Correction records.
