Fayetteville, N.C. — A Southview High School student is accused of vandalizing a Fayetteville church last weekend.
Derrek Thomas Silvas, 18, of 914 Faison Ave. was arrested at school Thursday on charges of breaking and entering a place of work, attempted larceny and safe cracking.
Investigators say Silvas broke into New Calvary Baptist Church, 3862 Gateway Drive, at around 4 a.m. Sunday. A church safe and typewriter were damaged, detectives said.
Silvas was expected to be released Thursday evening from the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $2,000 unsecured bond. He was scheduled for his first court appearance Friday afternoon.
The church was also vandalized last month. That incident remained under investigation.
