Chapel Hill police investigate assault

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Chapel Hill police are investigating an apparent assault on West Franklin Street.

A man who is being treated at UNC Hospitals for a fractured skull told police he remembered playing pool in a local bar on the evening of Feb. 20 but not how he got hurt.

Police ask that anyone who might have seen an incident that could have resulted in such an injury call either the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.

Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and anonymous, and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,200 for information that leads to arrest.

Working in downtown Chapel Hill on weekend evenings, I have generally been pleased with the speed and size force with which they respond to a call.

I'm tired of them focusing on DUI's at the expense of crime prevention. Because most of the bars and parking are located on or dump out on to Franklin Street if they concentrated on this area they could do both at the same time but unfortunately DUI's are such a money maker that what they are preoccupied with.

There are only so many cops, and there are a lot downtown at night. There are more bars than cops most nights.

That makes no sense. If you don't want them focusing on DWIs then why would you say focus on Franklin St so you can enforce DWIs?
