Fight over knife on bus leaves 11-year-old injured

e-mail print friendly

Cumberland County authorities were investigating the accidental knife wounding of a Reid Ross Middle School student on a school bus Thursday afternoon.

Twin brothers riding home from school on bus No. 200 were showing off a pocket knife with a 3-inch blade when a girl sitting in front of them tried to grab the knife and give it to the bus driver, authorities said.

During the ensuing struggle, the girl let go and one twin fell backward with the knife, cutting his brother on the forehead, authorities said.

The 11-year-old was taken to Womack Army Medical Center for treatment of the 2-inch cut, authorities said.

Authorities said the case will be referred to juvenile detectives to determine whether any charges will be filed.

hereandnow99, Yes, blaming the girl for her actions of grabbing for an open blade. The girl may have been watching too many Steven Segal movies and thought she could disarm the boys with a swift grab. Her actions could have led to fingers being severed or more severe injuries than a knick to the head of one of the boys.

Yes, the boys absolutely bear blame for possessing the knife. They should not have brought the knife to school/bus in the first place.

I'm questioning why she "brought attention to their actions" and why she chose the act of grabbing for the knife. She could have had a well established sense of right and wrong and thought her actions were warranted. She could have had a grudge against the boy(s) and wanted to get them in trouble. Without knowing the girl or situation, I can't say for sure; but there may be other motives aside from vigilante justice.

bk3s,

Are you serious? You gave the girl the benefit of the doubt, but then you suggested that she might have been "trying to get them in trouble." The boys did that all by themselves. She only brought attention to their actions. Good golly...blaming the girl...not good.

This is the fault of the boys for having the knife on the bus and their parents for not keeping close enough tabs on them. I had a Swiss Army knife when I was in middle school, but I knew darn well enough not to bring it to school with me, and especially not to play with it on the bus - that's just stupidity. The girl shouldn't have tried to grab the knife, not a great idea either, but do we really want to send the message that then best response when someone is doing something illegal and potentially dangerous is no response at all?? Rather than grab the knife and risk hurting herself or someone else she should have told the bus driver. Of course, the bus driver would need to have the training and wherewithal to act appropriately (stop the bus, get the rest of the kids off the bus, call the police/school/parents) and somehow I doubt that.

Zero tolerance equals zero intelligence. When the no drug on campus policy at schools is expelling students for Ibuprofen, that's lack of intelligence.

The blade on your standard Swiss Army knife is about 3 inches, realize you're not dealing with a Rambo knife. You ever been around 11 or 12 year old boys, they think pocket knives are cool, just showing off to their friends. The real danger was the girl grabbing for the knife. She risked serious injury to herself and inadvertently caused injury to the boy.

In the girls defense she probably thought she was doing the right thing. She knew knives are prohibited and wanted to get the knife out of the hands of the boys. Either that or she had a grudge against one of them and was trying to get them in trouble.

Can you imagine if the girl was the one cut in the "struggle" for the knife. That would have been the leading story on the 6pm news.

If the boys hadn't brought a knife to school none of this would have happened. Blaming the girl for the actions of these two boys is the most moronic thing I have heard some of you say for quite some time. I can only guess you are the same parents who encourage your children to take weapons to school. Instead of jailing the two boys, take the parents to jail for failing to teach the boys proper respect for the rules and for other students.
