City officials dedicated a downtown transportation center Monday to serve as Durham's hub for local and regional bus service and taxi service.

About 90 percent of Durham Area Transit Authority's passengers are expected to travel through the $17.5 million station, at 515 W. Pettigrew St. The two-story, 10,300-square-foot building include 20 canopied bus bays, six parking spaces for cabs and a "kiss-and-ride" drop-off location.

The transportation center sits on the site of the former Heart of Durham Hotel, which was demolished five years ago after sitting vacant for several years.

More money spent for nothing .. look at the buses after 4 PM they are either empty or have one or two riders..

$12M bus stop, well done Durham. The original 1996 plan was for a multimodal bus/train station but nobody could agree on anything. Now they will have 2 separate buildings.

Have fun dragging your luggage over the train tracks and across Chapel Hill Street to the bus station when the new Amtrak station opens.

Well Yippiededooda! More of my tax money obviously well spent!

And what if my goal is to avoid the crime-ridden downtown?

There are relatively few crimes downtown, especially near the new bus station (and American Tobacco.) Perception is one thing, but the data tells a very different story.

68_polara,

Thanks...I live in Durham and understand why it's required. I had just never heard it referred to as a CCP.

As I've said it before and will say again...it never ceases to amaze me how many "groups" are standing on corners in downtown Durham at 2:30am, and if you have to go back through at 4:30am...the same groups are standing in the same place.
