Durham renames downtown civic center

City and county officials on Tuesday renamed the struggling Durham Civic Center with an eye toward attracting more events downtown.

In addition to changing the facility's name to the Durham Convention Center, the city and county, which jointly own the building, are investing more than $3 million for interior upgrades like new ballrooms, carpeting and restrooms.

The name change was recommended by an outside consultant, who said a better description of the facility would make it easier book conventions and other events.

The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce was the first group to hold an event at the Durham Convention Center. The chamber held its annual meeting there Tuesday afternoon.

christineswisher:"Durham is a nasty place to live - downtown is totally dangerous and nobody in their right mind would want to spend time there. It is crime-ridden, crack-ridden and just plain ugly. I don't live in Durham - and never want to. I only go there because I have to work............"

Crime statistics soundly disprove that claim. The central area of downtown is generally quite safe, and I spend a lot of time there since I live just a couple of blocks north of the downtown loop. I also consider myself to be well within my right mind.

Of course, some people will continue to believe whatever image they've conjured up in their heads about Durham, so there's no point in confronting them with actual facts. Those of us who know better will continue to enjoy what we have now as well as all of the new things in store for Durham, downtown in particular.

With members of the Durham City Council telling employees "there's always the private sector", and threats of major budget cuts for basic necessities like trash collection and street maintenance, I wonder if these people REALLY felt good about spend who knows how much on an outside consultant to rename that building, and THEN spend $3 million or so for renovations? Priorities? Who needs them!

No Streets of Southpoint shopping, Christine?
