Crash closes Franklin Street as power lines fall

Chapel Hill, N.C. — A car hit a power pole on Franklin Street, knocking out power to a small number of customers early Monday night and closing the town's main east-west thoroughfare for a time.

The single-vehicle wreck happened near the intersection with Boundary Street around 7:30 p.m. No one was injured.

Duke Power officials said they had crews on the scene, making repairs. About 14 customers lost power.

The crash brought power lines and a transformer down into the road, officials said.

There is a difference between facts and PR. It's pretty easy to estimate that there are more than 14 houses on E. Franklin between Boundary and Howell. Add the Glendale, Davie Circle and Roosevelt Dr. neighborhoods and see how inaccurate the reported outage was.

14 customers? C'mon now, power was out on both sides of Franklin Street and the neighborhoods on each side of the street. 14? C'mon now. Didn't come back on until 4am either.

How does Duke Power determine the number of customers affected? I can assure you it was more than 14! We live 1/2 mile from the accident site and were without power for 8 hours. Our entire neighborhood was out and that is more than 14 houses.
