The state Department of Transportation spent more than $7.6 million to clear snow and ice from North Carolina highways during last week's snowstorm, officials said Thursday.

The storm's cost will rise in the coming weeks as outside contractors hired by DOT to help clear the roads file their invoices, DOT spokeswoman Dara Demi said.

Up to 6 inches of snow fell on central and eastern North Carolina on Jan. 20, prompting Gov. Beverly Perdue to declare a state of emergency.

DOT officials couldn't immediately provide a breakdown of how the money was spent.

TheAdmiral...you expect better? IMHO the headline could/should read "Snowstorm Cleanup Cost $7.6million". Anyone one care to guess how much to replace all the cute little red and white reflectors that got scraped off the roads?

"I don't get it. The salt sand and brine mixture were already paid for, the trucks and plows already belong to the county and we have employees to do this work, why did it cost so much. Just how many "outside contractors" did they hire and how much do they charge cause I should be able to live an entire year on just on "SNOW DAY" in NC. mmania"

My thoughts exactly. What gives?

I would flip it and say that we saved money in the past 3 years in that we have not had a snowstorm in at least 4 years here in the Raleigh area. They should budget for at least 1 storm a year and if it does not happen, bank that money for a bad snow year.
