Nathan Jerome Hudson, 43, of Clayton, and his stepson, Jared Austin Johnson, 19, also of Clayton, died Sunday evening in a wreck on Winston Road, the state Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the crash happened about 6 p.m. along the 800 block of Winston Road between Guy and Cornwallis roads.

Hudson was driving east on Winston when he lost control of his car and it crossed the center line and struck a westbound pickup truck, troopers said.

The driver of the pickup, Cirilo Dela Luz-Medina, 23, of Clayton, was transported by ambulance to WakeMed with minor injuries. Troopers said they charged him with driving without a license.

My husband is a cousin of Jared's on his father's side and the family is in shock of course. Jared had just completed his first semester of crew school where he was studying to be a member of a NASCAR pit crew. He had received a 4.0 for the semester and we were all very proud of him. He seems to have left us too soon but the Johnsons are holding to their faith in Christ Jesus to carry them through this trial. We pray others will come to know Christ and grow closer to Him through this tragedy.

My sympathy to the families and loved ones.

I only met Nathan a couple of times (and several years ago at that). Nathan was a wonderful man who crossed my mind periodically through the years. His passion for his kids was something to behold. My prayers to his family and to Jared's mother.

This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to their family, mom/wife and son/brother. :(

Prayers are with the families....such a loss....
