Crews called out to two Johnston County fires

Johnston County fire departments battled two separate blazes Saturday, but authorities said that no one was injured.

One fire broke in an old farmhouse at 536 Woods Road, between U.S. Highway 70 and Crocker Road southeast of Smithfield, around 10:30 a.m., emergency dispatch officials said. When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

All the occupants of the house managed to escape safely.

Firefighters from Pine Level, Benson, Princeton, Brogden, Smithfield and Selma responded and brought the fire under control within two hours.

The fire spread to a garage and a 5-acre wooded area, Smithfield Fire officials said.

Shortly after midnight, a fire broke out at a home at 104 N. Green St. in Selma. Firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence when they arrived and had to open the roof to put out the blaze.

There was no word on the cause of either fire.
