Five students injured in school bus wreck

Zebulon, N.C. — Paramedics sent five elementary school students to the hospital after a wreck involving a Wake County school bus in Zebulon Thursday morning.

School officials said it appeared that a car bumped the bus at Gannon Avenue and Pineview Drive, outside the Pineview subdivision, around 8:40 a.m.

Paramedics checked out the more than 40 students on the bus and sent five to WakeMed in Raleigh as a precaution, said Bill Poston, a spokesman for the Wake County Public School System. He said the worst injuries were bumps and bruises.

The car driver was uninjured, Zebulon police said.

The bus was carrying students to Wakelon Elementary School.

Tammie Sexton, Wakelon's principal, came to the scene and made sure that students got on another bus to go to school, Poston said. School officials will next begin the process of notifying parents.

Zebulon police continued to investigate the cause of the wreck.

Yes I am a parent of a student at Wakelon and yes I did get an automated phone call from the principal informing me about the accident, etc. Yes the principal did go to accident as well as the hospital to insure the students safety. Thank God no one was seriously hurt...

If you want to see real danger to your children, go on I-440 and watch how badly these buses back up traffic, and then how some of the cars dart in and around them in the mornings and afternoons! These are accidents waiting to happen. To sad it's going to take someone getting killed to stop this senseless busing activity......parents, and all tax payers, need to demand it be stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is needless endangerment of our children. The money saved in gas and bus repairs and maintenance will go a long way in helping bring all schools up to par, and will make our children a lot safer.

I hope the BOE is storing every Wake County students contact phone number in their cell phones so they can personally inform the parents of the students involved in the next accident! I know I'm exagerating, but there will be even more bus accidents when kids are being bussed 10-20 miles to school.

Reassignment to schools further away is going to equal more and more bus accidents! I hope the BOE is storing every Wake County students contact phone number in their cell phones so they can personally inform the parents of the students involved in the next accident! Thanks WRAL for posting that the principal came to the scene to ensure student safety. not only is that exactly what an awesome principal would do but it was so nice to read this bit from you as reporters. thanks to the principal and to you. praying thanks to God that no one was hurt too badly. and no my kids dont go to this school. :)
