Cary-made snacks pulled from shelves

e-mail print friendly

Stores are pulling some snacks from shelves in response to a salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter.

Kellogg Company issued a "hold" Thursday for Austin and Keebler brand Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.

The crackers, which are manufactured in Cary, contain peanut butter from Peanut Corporation of America, which Kellogg said has been the focus of a salmonella investigation.

The move means Kellogg will hold any inventory in its control, remove the products from retail-store shelves and encourage customers and consumers not to eat the products until regulatory officials complete their investigation.

Consumers with questions or who would like a product refund can call the Kellogg Consumer Response Center at 888-314-2060.

If you're asking this question, do you worry every time that you open a pack of raw chicken or crack an egg that you may be breathing in salmonella?

Dang, I just at a pack of them there krackers........hmmmmm.

"...or breathing near such items?"

Salmonella is not air-born. It has to be ingested. http://www.drgreene.com/21_1178.html

Just to add to the safey issue, workers don't "handle" the peanut butter, cheese or Krackers with their hands. Cant us C in kracker

Hi anneonymousone. Two things in response to your question. Eating the items in question is 99% safe. Chances are that they will be found to be safe after analysis. Handling the items even if they are contaminated is safer than touching the handle on a grocery cart at your local supermarket :)
