Pedestrian killed while crossing I-95 in Smithfield

A pedestrian died around 11 p.m. Tuesday after a tractor-trailer hit her on Interstate 95 in Johnston County near mile marker 95.

Troopers say a Saia Motor Freight truck hit Margaret Kennen, 43, as she walked across the southbound lanes from the median. The truck driver will not face charges.

Kennen was from Scranton, Pa., officials said. Authorities said they were not sure why she walked across the highway.

Troopers blocked part of the highway for several hours after the crash.

If crossing both sets of lanes then by all means walk to an overpass. Unfortunately a breakdown between both lanes cannot always be avoided. I guess if your car is acting up then TRY to get off on the right side.

The unfortunate fatality a few weeks ago on I-40 near Rock Quarry occured because someone broke down in the median and was trying to get off the highway.

So sad.

Wow - what are people doing walking on the highway in the first place. Car/Truck vs Person.

As much as I am biased in favor of pedestrians, it sounds like a no brainer to not charge the driver in this case. I assume her car broke down? I'm always afraid for people who have to pull of on the center median.
