Police on Tuesday said they were looking for a Durham man who had a cell phone belonging to a prominent businessman the day after the businessman was attacked in a parking garage.

Four men beat and robbed Martin Eakes, 54, co-founder of Self-Help Credit Union, on Nov. 24 in a city-owned garage on Corcoran Street. The men took his wallet and two cell phones, police said.

Harry Wayne Massey Jr., 28, is wanted on a charge of felony possession of stolen property. Police have not brought any charges in connection with the assault.

The incident prompted the Durham Police Department to step up patrols downtown.

Self-Help has increased its reward to $5,000, on top of a Crime Stoppers reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Anyone with information on Massey’s whereabouts is asked to call Durham police investigator A.C. Rogers at 919-560-4406, extension 270, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
