Chatham eyes expanding liquor sales

Pittsboro, N.C. — Chatham County commissioners have set a public hearing next week on whether to hold a referendum to allow liquor sales by the drink.

“The county commissioners want to hear people’s thoughts on this issue before they make a decision one way or the other,” County Manager Charlie Horne said in a statement. “No decisions have been made as to whether this should go on any county ballot.”

The only places in Chatham County that have liquor-by-the-drink are Fearrington Village, which was authorized by special state legislation, and a few specific facilities.

The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Superior Courtroom in Pittsboro.

re:yeah.... i understand more is at stake,like revenue.but a majority of chatham county do not want to see those chain restaurants here.we pride ourselves in smart progress and protecting the values and hometown feel.what i was saying is the basic reason why we would be passing liquor by the drink.personal enjoyment.we have plenty of established,local restaurants that do great business that would like to offer their patrons more than just a beer and wine.

There is more at stake than just having the choice to buy a mixed drink. More importantly, it would open the way for more restaurants in Chatham County.

no matter what,the citizens of chatham county should have the CHOICE to have a drink or not in a restaurant.we should not be dictated by the local govt what we can drink.because we already have beer and wine by the drink why should liquor be any different???
