The Johnston County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday determined that a man whose body was found Tuesday in a trash container off Interstate 40 had killed himself.

The body of Randal Ray Rockwell, 59, of Clermont, Fla., was found in a trash bin 3 miles north of Benson near an I-40 rest stop. An autopsy conducted Wednesday showed he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The westbound portion of the rest area was closed for a time Tuesday night as Johnston County deputies and State Bureau of Investigation agents combed the scene for evidence.

The rest area attendant who discovered the body declined to comment Wednesday, but another attendant said authorities towed a car with Florida license plates from the rest area late Tuesday.

Authorities haven't disclosed whether a gun was found in the trash bin.

well it's obvious he had some amount of depression. how many happy go lucky people shoot themselves on purpose.

All this talk of depression. Who said he was depressed?? Wolfpack7070

Thanks for the comment. You know how some people grab at every straw that they can. Just Remember people this man took the why's with him. So the family and everyone else will never know.

somethings fishy here and i think as usual that "wonderful" wral is leaving out some important details. it just doesn't add up. my prayers are with him and his family, friends and all who knew him.

I heard of a man who drove to a funeral home and shot himself in his car. Sad. This is sad too. If the worker had not found him, imagine the fact he could have been lost to his family, forever in a landfill. I feel very sad for his family.

All this talk of depression. Who said he was depressed??
