Burlington, N.C. — Burlington police suspect that alcohol use caused a wreck that sent a bicyclist to the hospital shortly after noon Sunday.

Witnesses told police that Randy McAllister, 47, was riding a bike east in the 2500 block of McKinney Street, where he lives. McAllister crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 2001 Kia, driven by Nadine Brown, of Burlington.

McAllister suffered head injuries, and a helicopter crew flew him to Duke University Hospital in Durham. His condition was unknown.

Police said that they suspect that alcohol use by McAllister was the contributing factor in the wreck. They continued to investigate the case.

In 1991, McAllister was convicted as a habitual impaired driver, and his drivers' license permanently revoked, according to state Department of Correction records. His lengthy criminal record includes at least five DWI convictions, as well convictions for habitual misdemeanor assault and taking indecent liberties with a minor.
